The HOLY GRAIL WAR Meme

Seven Masters, magi of the present day. Seven Servants, heroes of days past.
One Holy Grail, granting whomever claims it a wish. Only one team of Master and Servant may claim it.
Who will it be?
For those unfamiliar with Fate/Stay Night or Fate/Zero, you can find a better explanation of the Holy Grail War here. (Note: The Holy Grail War in Fate/EXTRA functions in a dramatically different way, and one not followed for purposes of this meme.)

Instructions
1. Comment with your character. In the subject line, put that character's name, canon, and which role (Master, Servant, or either) you would like them to fulfill. Though not mandatory, it would be preferred that you give a brief summary of your character as they will (most likely) be AU'd into the setting. (NOTE: If your character can fill the role of Servant, I suggest you state which class(es) -- Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, or Berserker -- they fall into.)
2. Reply to others' comments. Pick your character's role (and the other character's if they list "Either" as their preference), then use the RNG to pick a scenario that fits the two characters' roles.
3. Enjoy! Though there might be triggers, depending on how the prompts are interpreted.

TWO MASTERS

1. Battle. Who says that Servants get to have all the fun? After all, most Masters try to kill each other, too. Whatever the circumstances, the two of you are locked in a fight. Neither of you are willing to use your Command Spells just yet, so no Servants here. Just two magi duking it out.

2. Alliance. There's a bigger threat out there. Either one Servant is exceptionally powerful, or the situation has changed and the participants need to take action aginst it. One way or another, you're teamed up with one of your rivals for the Holy Grail. How long will this last before you try to stab each other in the back? Or, will something more develop?

3. Protection. Uh-oh! One of you has lost your Servant! Unfortunately, there's no way you'd get to the church safely on your own, so the other one will help you get there! Or maybe you don't trust the priest presiding over the Holy Grail War and are giving shelter to them yourself? Given their track record, no one would blame you.

4. Death. One or both of you lay dying. It might have been by the other's hand, or by someone else's entirely. How will you spend your last moments in the presence of one of your rivals?

5. You, Too? Surprise! You may have been friends before, but you've just discovered that you're both Masters! How will you handle this revelation?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

MASTER AND SERVANT

1. Are You My Master? The summoning is complete. Whether intentional or not, catalyst or not, a magus has summoned a Servant. What kind of meeting was it? Was everything totally under control, or did a hitch occur? Or maybe it happened in the middle of a life-or-death situation!

2. Identity. Either the Servant has flat out told the Master their identity, or they unleashed their Noble Phantasm. Either way, the cat is out of the bag. How will the Master react, now that they know their Servant's name and legend? Will anything change between the two?

3. Battle Aftermath. A battle has just ended. Who participated? Are either of you hurt? Did the Master have to use a Command Spell? Any number of things could have happened here.

4. Discord. Uh-oh. It looks like the Master and the Servant don't get along. Here come the arguments! Don't do something stupid, like waste a Command Spell over a triviality...

5. Love. And then, there's the opposite. Sometimes Masters and Servants fall in love with each other. How will this affect things?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

TWO SERVANTS

1. Battle. This is what usually happens when two Servants meet -- they duke it out. This probably says enough as it is.

2. Alliance. There's a bigger threat out there. Either one Servant is exceptionally powerful, or the situation has changed and the participants need to take action against it. One way or another, you're teamed up with one of your rivals for the Holy Grail. How long will this last before you try to stab each other in the back? Or, will something more develop?

3. The Grail Dialogues. Maybe you're not interested in fighting just yet. Maybe you just want to sit down and talk with the other Servant. Find out what they want, what makes them tick. Get some wine while you're at it -- nothing like good wine to go with good talk!

4. Death. One or both of you lay dying...again. It might have been by the other's hand, or by someone else's entirely. How will you spend your last moments in this War in the presence of one of your rivals?

5. Identity. Congratulations, you've just learned each other's identities! Will this change the situation, or will you press onward?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

Then, it must be something that could normally 'never happen.' Something like changing the past...or, perhaps, returning someone to life...?

[He never looks away as he says that, his gaze and sheer presence boring into the man in front of him.]
reflash: (me: im fine)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-04 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
[His gaze has gone distant, as it slides away. He's not surprised at the question, that's the only real thing anyone would be grabbing at with the Grail's power.]

Am I that predictable?
hatesdeerstalkers: (:|)

[personal profile] hatesdeerstalkers 2020-03-04 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Just for a moment -

There's a flicker of dissapointment, before it's gone.

Ah, well. Though they may be similar, such a motive wasn't uncommon.

It was just...sad. Sad, that someone who could call to him inherently would be restricting himself like this.]

In this sense, yes - Again, with you calling me forth so easily, there could only be a few other options.

[He gives a small sigh, turning his own gaze away as if he's suddenly become bored.]

It's a pity you bear regret for things in the past.
reflash: (*crushes my emotions w/ my bare hands*)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-04 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh, he doesn't like that. He doesn't like that feeling of disappointment, like he's given the wrong answer. Yukio doesn't give wrong answers.]

What other options would you expect?
hatesdeerstalkers: (Preposterous and stupid)

[personal profile] hatesdeerstalkers 2020-03-06 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Unfortunately, he did. And while Moriarty doesn't think less, it's just...

hm. Looking at him now...though he's taken steps down the path of evil, perhaps he's wavering. Wondering if he should turn back or not, wondering if he even has that option.

...Very well. He would be the guide, and illuminate both paths - show the way the young manb in front of him could go, instead of floundering in uncertain darkness.]

As I said, to change the past. Indeed, bringing someone to life is, of itself, attempting to retroactively change the past - causing someone who has died to be brought to this world, as if the event that took their life never happened.

If I might say so - it's a foolish wish.

[Then, he shrugs.]

But merely being in this war is foolish in of itself.
reflash: (sad boy in snow)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-06 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
It may be foolish, but changing the past is something I cannot do on my own, no matter how much effort I put into it. [And he won't be told that the wish itself is foolish, not with what he's trying to change. Not with who he's trying to bring back.]

And you are in this war as well.
hatesdeerstalkers: (spins his web)

[personal profile] hatesdeerstalkers 2020-03-06 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
That I am - But, then, I never said that I wasn't a fool.

[Another shrug, before he stands.]

Well, then. I've heard your wish. Shall we be off to scout out the town, Master?

[And regardless of his response -

Time passed. The days of the war slowly ticked by, running into the players bit by bit.

But it was the most recent player that seemed to shake his Master the most - Berserker, who had a female Master. Though he was an Archer, they'd been placed in a bad position - and so he'd fought directly with the black haired teenager wreathed in blue flames. He'd wondered to himself if the boy was an Oni due to the horns that sprouted from his head - Perhaps Kidomaru, the son of Shuten Douji, who was both human and Oni?

But it was when his Master revealed himself that everything seemed to change - He couldn't miss the look of shock on Berserker's face, nor the look on Yukio's....

The break in the fighting allowed him to grab his Master and flee, whisking them off in an instant to a far away rooftop.

letting his master go, Moriarty raised a hand to his bleeding cuts and singes, giving a sigh.]

...Well. That went about as well as expected, hm?
reflash: (my biggest dream is to calm down)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Yukio hits the rooftop, knees giving out.

He wasn't expecting that. His brother shouldn't be here, he's been dead for years, Yukio watched him die but that was Rin, that was his brother wrapped in blue flames and responding to a Master's instructions. But it doesn't make sense, it's too soon, it's too soon for Rin to have been caught by the Throne, and Yukio's mind is racing in fruitless circles as he tries to wrap his head around the massive changes to this entire War, to his entire grasp of reality.

His brother had looked at him and said his name.

[Yes - that cinched it, didn't it? That reaction, the fall - Moriarty sighed, leaning against some brickwork to support himself as he waited patiently for his Master to recollect himself.]

A relative, I assume? No...Brothers, I'd say. You do look rather similar.
reflash: (my biggest dream is to calm down)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-10 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
My older brother. [He says, trying to think of... anything, right now.] We're... we were twins.

[But Rin looked... exactly like Yukio remembers, and looked too young. Somehow Yukio is the only one who moved on.]

I don't understand... why him? My brother shouldn't be here. [Yukio doesn't want to kill him again.]
hatesdeerstalkers: (mmhmm)

[personal profile] hatesdeerstalkers 2020-03-10 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The Throne is outside time, Master. Or dimensions.

Perhaps he became a hero in another world, close to this one. Perhaps how he died before in this one turned him into legend in the future, enough to write his deeds onto the throne.

[There's a soft shrug.]

Ultimately, I do not know. A conjecture is that he was summoned because you were involved, if you were twins and his master had no catalyst.

[Another pause, before his eyes narrow.]

...Is he who you wished to bring back, Okumura?
reflash: (why are 15 year olds so angry)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-10 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[There are too many things to think about, the hows and whys of the summoning, the consequences, and... the Throne. Especially the Throne.

He gets his feet under him and stands, and then manages to answer.
]

He is, but this complicates things.
hatesdeerstalkers: (somber...)

[personal profile] hatesdeerstalkers 2020-03-10 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I should say it would.

[There's another pause, before he gives a shake of his head.]

...Give it up, Master. If your brother is truly part of the Throne now, then your wish can never truly come to pass.
reflash: (Your life is your life)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-10 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yukio hates to lose.

It was true when they were children, and it's true now. A challenge in front of him just means Yukio's going to rise to fight it, and this insurmountable barrier just makes him more determined.
]

It won't be the first time I've done something impossible.

My summoning is not like attempting to bring a Servant back to life.

[Sorry, that's what he's thinking Yukio's referring to, honestly. His eyes are cold, as he explains.]

At most, your brother will incarnate - But the likelihood of him being the brother you remember will be incredibly low. Regardless, if it is an attempt to clear yourself of the same sin Cain performed, then you should know that the blood of fratricide will never wash away.

[He is, after all, James Moriarty. A man just as smart as Sherlock Holmes, his equal and rival and nemesis.

He has seen the guilt Yukio carries with him, his single-mindedness towards his wish. At first, he assumed it was merely the guilt of being the one who survived, but...

No. It was too clear - Yukio had taken his steps towards the path of Evil by staining his hands with the blood of a person he had once shared a womb with.

It was a miracle he didn't summon Cain - ah, but Cain was said to still be alive, was he not? Immortal and marked for the crime of the first murder. Forced to live and bear the weight of his sin.]
reflash: (Your life is your life)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-11 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not referring to your summoning. [No, that's just one more improbable thing that Yukio has made real, another thing that he shouldn't have been able to do but that happened and that he's needed to adjust his plans to.]

And I am not trying to wash my hands clean. I chose this path, and I won't pretend I didn't. [He knows that the guilt isn't going to leave him, that there's no way to make himself blameless.]

Who else has tried to resurrect a Servant, and what happened? You know the details, so tell me.
hatesdeerstalkers: (somber...)

[personal profile] hatesdeerstalkers 2020-03-11 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Well. This is interesting, and yet....Still, there's a contradiction there. One, perhaps, Yukio himself does not want to face.]

Yet, you still want to bring him back to life....ah, well.

[For now, he lets it go, bringing his attention back to the question before sighing.]

A man named Marisbury Animusphere summoned Solomon as his servant for the war - and, at the end, refused to use the Third Magic the Grail is meant for, allowing himself and his Servant a wish. The Servant wished to be human - and so he was, but not as himself. He became a new man who knew of his past self, but looked very different and did not consider himself as 'Solomon.'

I cannot speak as to if it would be the same for all Servants. But....are you willing to have your brother be 'reborn' into a new life? And, not only that....but for your wish, you would have to kill him yet again.
reflash: (*crushes my emotions w/ my bare hands*)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-11 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm prepared to kill a lot of people to win this War. [Yukio says, like he wasn't just on his hands and knees on the roof, shaken to the core by the realization.]

And with a thought as vague as "I want to be human" behind his wish, it's no wonder he was incarnated as a different person. [Yukio will have to be specific, but he already has been, the shape of his wish has carved itself in his mind since he started on this quest for victory.]
hatesdeerstalkers: (:|)

[personal profile] hatesdeerstalkers 2020-03-19 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Even to kill that brother of yours once more, just to return him to life? ...You understand the insanity of such a statement, don't you?

[Still, it's clear Yukio won't be swayed by whatever he says - so he lets it go, lets the inherent tragedy of this entire situation just...slip away.

Inwardly, he wonders how his Master will break, once his brother is killed in front of him once more - the thought unsettling for just an instant before he forces it down, a cold tone coming to his voice as he speaks.]

Very well. Then I am sure you will find the 'correct' way to wish your brother back to life - ah, but then what? Will you go back to living happily with him, pretending that nothing happened? Will he be fine with living such a life, knowing that his brother killed him twice and then brought him back, as if his suffering meant nothing in the end?

...Are you even sure that your brother would wish for such a thing, Master?
reflash: (Default)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-22 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you doubting my resolve, Archer? [This doesn't change anything, it can't change anything. This was always his plan, to bring Rin back and fix this. It's not about pretending nothing happened, it's about changing what he did, undoing a mistake. And he won't be swayed by this Servant's words.]
hatesdeerstalkers: too bad he's married to math (hohoho)

[personal profile] hatesdeerstalkers 2020-03-22 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I am doubting that you have asked yourself these questions, Master.

However, if you have....then ignore the prattling of this old man. It's clear you won't be swayed, honestly.

[He shrugs, brushing idly at his sleeve.]

All I wish is for you to not be broken by the extent of your wish - It would be a waste of a mind.
reflash: (me: im fine)

[personal profile] reflash 2020-03-23 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have had time enough to think this through, Archer. Both my wish and the potential outcomes. That my older brother is involved in this war is unexpected, but it will not change my goals. [He killed Rin once before, and that broke him in ways he hasn't let himself consider, he would have been so different if he wasn't focused on this goal, if he weren't still trapped in some way on that bridge and in that night. But he doesn't let himself think about it, he just targets the outcome and aims for it, and refuses to let anything else get in his way.]
